SC Villa, KCC FC, Police and Express FC are big
names and well-respected Ugandan clubs when it
comes to the Cecafa Clubs Championship.
KCC was the first Ugandan club to win the Cecafa
title when it beat Tanzanian side, Simba 3-2 on
penalty shoot out in 1978. The following year
(1979) KCC lost 0-1 to Kenya’s Abaluhya
in the finals, also becoming the first team in
Uganda to play two consecutive finals.
As years went on, Express FC equaled KCC’s
record of playing two consecutive finals, in 1994
when it lost 1-2 to Al-Merrikh of Sudan and in
1995 when Simba of Tanzania beat them 5-3 on penalty
shoot out after a 1-all normal time draw.
On Thursday, Uganda Revenue Authority beat Simba
1-0 to advance to this year’s finals, joining
the class of KCC and Express. The tax collectors
lost 1-2 to Rwanda’s APR in the finals last
year and have again made it to this edition’s
finals.
SC Villa is the most successful Ugandan club
in Cecafa affairs, having won the title three
times, in 1987 when they beat Al Merrikh of Sudan
1-0, 2003 after beating Simba 1-0 and 2005 when
they humiliated APR with a 3-0 victory.
Villa has also lost in the finals three times.
In 1991 when Simba beat them 3-0, 1993 losing
1-2 to Yanga and 1999 when they again lost to
Yanga 1-4 on penalty shoot out following a 1-1
normal time result.
Police FC is also considered a Cecafa giant having
lifted the title in 2006 when they registered
a 2-1 victory over Tanzanian team Moro United
in Tanzania.
