Last season’s best to be feted

For the first time ever, SC Villa will be rewarding its players in what is expected to be a picturesque Player of the Year awards ceremony at Sheraton Hotel.

The inaugural ceremony will take place on September 17 and shall be a permanent fixture on the club’s rota. The awards are expected to have a ripple effect as they will, in the book of Villa board chairman Fred Muwema, bolster the club’s image as well as make the players downright competitive  “We want to encourage our players to play well and always aim to be the best,” says Muwema of the awards.

Muwema acknowledged that although Villa didn’t win any trophy last season, players that wore their hearts on the sleeve will be rewarded handsomely on September 17. This is a practice that top football clubs the world over have executed with resounding success. Muwema is confident Villa will replicate their lead.

The awards will be a black tie event as Joseph Kanaaba, the Director of Football strategy, succinctly put it. The formal and red carpet touch that the awards shall assume will, Kanaaba adds, reflect well on the Villa brand in the broader societal fabric.

The awards shall be in a raft of subsets. These include: Footballer of the Year (Paul Hasule award), Best Defender (William Nkemba award), Top Scorer (Majid Musisi award), Best Young Player (Paul Mukatabala award) and the Best Midfielder (Ronald Vvubya award).

These awards have been named after former Villa legends to try and inspire the players. With players like the late Paul Hasule and the late Majid Musisi catapulting Villa to greater heights in the 1980s and 1990s, looking up to them would inevitably be a driving force to any footballer that wants to leave a mark on Ugandan football.

A ticket to the awards night will cost Shs 100,000 an individual; Shs 3 million for a table of ten will cost; Shs 2 million for a table of eight; and Shs 1 million for a table of six.
