Villa crash Utoda again

The Jogoos opened their second round account in the Bell Super League with a 4-0 win over Utoda FC on Saturday 21st January at Wankulukuku stadium. Two goals in each half put paid to Utoda’s expectation to spring a surprise against a team they have never beaten before.

In a way, the result showed that Villa are clearly making it a habit putting Utoda FC to the sword. Noah Semakula, whom the manager Mike Mutebi has been lauding lately opened Villa’s account with a superb strike midway the first half.

A long pass from right full-back Ayub Kisalita was met by Semakula on the edge of the Utoda penalty area, only to chest control it before striking it on the half-volley over Utoda’s goalkeeper, Isaac Semwezi. Although the Jogoos weren’t as fluid in the early exchanges, they grew in confidence as the game wore on, dictating play. Chances were being created but not being taken with the biggest culprit, striker Herman Wasswa and midfielder, Moses Ndawula.

However, on the stroke of half-time, a good midfield interplay between new signing, Misi Katende and Captain Isaac Kirabira, saw a well worked out move from the left find its way onto the right, as the ball landed at the feet of Wasswa, who quickly turned and raced towards goal before unleashing a fierce shot that went off the goalie’s left post before it settles into the net behind the goalie’s right post.

This goal came as blessed relief for Wasswa who hadn’t scored a league goal since October. The second half was largely one way traffic as Villa strung the passes together from resumption, but again with several scoring chances going to waste during the early exchanges.

But on 50 minutes, Villa were awarded a corner-kick, which was delivered by Katende only for the ball to land in front of Kisalita who did the easy thing of kicking the ball into the back of the net to punish Utoda’s loose marking.

Soon after, forward Charles Sempa was introduced for another forward, Paul Musamali, who was making his debut. Sempa’s first contribution was an audacious attempt to loop the ball over Utoda’s goalie after noticing that he was off his line. The ball flew just inches away from the post.

This led to a rare round of applause from his manager, who considered that attempt by Sempa as a sign of confidence. A few moments later, Sempa came closer only for his lob to be tipped over the bar.

However, as the game got into its final quarter, the manager brought on Steven full-back Sekiziyivu for Kisalita and Fred Muhumuza replaced Kirabira to add more attacking impetus in the team. It duly paid off on 85 minutes when a fine back-heeled pass from Wasswa was met by an on running Sekiziyivu, who beat one Utoda defender before unleashing a fierce shot into the bottom right corner of Semweezi’s goal.

This goal got Mutebi off his seat and he said after the final whistle that it was a lovely goal just like the other three. “But I specifically celebrated this one because of the way it was finely built.” Although the manager was happy about the result, he told sc-villa.com that he was a bit disappointed with the way some of his players drifted in and out of the game.

“We must maintain our concentration if we are to do better than we have done today.” He added that much as there is no bad win, the players must avoid putting their foot off the pedal when they score one or two goals. “We must keep going and if it means scoring ten, so be it. We are going back to work on that and hopefully we can enjoy a run of games where we score freely,” Mutebi said with a smile.
