Patrick Ssenfuka came off the bench to net the
winning goal, as National Super League defending
champions Kampala City Council FC laid down a
marker by beating rivals SC Villa 2-1 on Saturday
night.
It was KCC’s first league victory over SC
Villa since 2000. The victory continued coach
George Nsimbe’s fairytale run with the club.
He has now won 14 out of the last 15 games with
KCC.
However, Sula Kato’s Villa were quicker
out of the blocks and the record champions took
the lead when Emmanuel Okwi sliced through KCC’s
shaky central defense to slot home with the calmness
of a hired assassin.
The champions hit back almost immediately when
man of the match Vincent Kayizi converted a free
kick on the edge of the Villa penalty area.
The free kick was awarded for a foul on pint-sized
dribbling wizard Jeremiah Ssebuyira. Earlier in
the day, Idris Kaye scored a spectacular goal
to give Kakungulu Cup winners Victors a deserved
1-0 victory over 2005 champions Police.
Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Express FC, Bunnamwaya,
Maji, Iganga, Bugerere and Simba got off to winning
starts. URA hit Kinyara 4-0 courtesy of two goals
from Martin Muwanga whereas Bunnamwaya edged Nalubaale
1-0. Yuda Mugalu, who missed most of last season
after a stomach operation, scored the only goal.
In Lira, Godfrey Wakaza grabbed a brace to give
Simba maximum points against league debutantes
Youfra FC. Express meanwhile needed an own goal
from a hapless defender to beat newcomers Sharing
1-0.
