The Fufa competitions committee has released the tentative opening fixtures for the 2008/2009 National Super League (NSL) season. Defending champions Kampala City Council FC face cross road rivals SC Villa in one of the two games to be played on the opening day on August 2.

The two most successful clubs in the country will lock horns under floodlights after Kakungulu Cup winners Victors FC clash with 2005 champions Police FC in the opening game of the season at 4 p.m. GTV will telecast both games live.

Federation publicist Rogers Mulindwa who released the fixture yesterday, said they are subject to changes. “This is a tentative fixture but we want the teams involved in this fixture to start preparations ahead of the kick off,” said Mulindwa.

It will be the third year running that record champions SC Villa are playing the opening game of the league. Last year they drew 1-1 with Express FC while in 2006 they beat KCC 3-2. Villa’s new coach Sula Kato is confident his team can tame KCC in the opening game.

“The start is always very hard because both sides tend to be nervous but I think we have an upper hand over KCC despite them winning the league last year,” Kato said.

Last season, Villa beat KCC 3-2 in the first round, before the teams played out a goalless draw in the return leg. KCC coach George Nsimbe is equally upbeat ahead of the new season “Villa is a strong side but I think this time things are going to be very different because my boys have tasted the sweetness of winning and I don’t think they will just lose that sweetness anyhow,” Nsimbe said.
